What is Ear microsuction ?

Micro

/ˈmaɪ.krəʊ/

In reference to the microscope used for the procedure.

Suction

/ˈsʌk.ʃən/

Refers to the device used in a machine that operates by suction to clean the ears.

Ear microsuction is a safe and effective method of removing excess earwax and other debris from the outer ear canal using a specialised medical instrument called a microscope.

During the procedure, Dr Riham will use a gentle suction device and a tiny, specially-designed tube to carefully and precisely remove any buildup of earwax or other debris that may be causing discomfort, hearing problems, or other symptoms.

procedures:

  • Removal of impacted ear wax

  • Removal wax in complex ears (grommets, ear-drum surgery etc.)

  • Removal of debris from an infection (Otitis Externa)

  • Removal of foreign bodies

WHAT should i expect from the procedure?

During the procedure, you will be seated in a comfortable position, and Dr Riham will use a specialised microscope to carefully and precisely remove any debris from your ear canal. You will feel a tugging sensation as the debris is removed. The procedure usually takes only a few minutes per ear.

After the procedure, you may experience some mild discomfort or temporary hearing issues, but these should resolve quickly.

WHy NOt ear syringing?

Ear syringing is a procedure which involves flushing the ear canal with water or saline solution using a special syringe or bulb, in order to dislodge and remove the buildup of wax and debris.

Ear syringing is a blind procedure - which means the clinician does not have a direct visual into the ear canal as they do the procedure.

  1. Increased risk of complications:

    • Increased risk of ear infections (a moist environment is perfect for bacteria to grow!)

    • Increased risk of causing a hole in the ear drum (due to the pressure used to flush the ear canal)

    • More likely to damage to the inner skin lining of the ear (the flushing process is quite abrasive to the ear lining!)

  2. Lack of precision - unable to fully remove all ear canal debris (as its a blind procedure)

  3. Increased likelihood pain and discomfort (due to the pressure effects)
